BAT IN MICE AND MEN - Nature magazine 23/30 December 1993 reports on new findings from the USA and Canada by Dr Bradford Lowell, Professor Jean Himms-Hagen and colleagues: As Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) between the shoulder blades in mice switches off, mice become more sensitive to the cold, they get very fat and their appetite increases - As BAT switches back on their weight returns to normal. This long-awaited but major breakthrough in clarifying the massive role of brown fat (BAT) in preventing long-term obesity, follows pioneering British researchers Dr Nancy Rothwell and Professor Michael Stock's findings, published over 15 years ago in Nature (issue 6 September 1979), suggesting that many men (and women) likely possess significantly active brown fat especially in areas such as the back, breastbone and neck that can be switched on (for some reason) when they eat excess calories; I report now on a new way to help regulate brown fat - again from Britain - that of The science of CLOtherapy - improving the environmental temperature of the nervous system, and so your vitality, by redressing the fat thermostat; Adrenaline-REsearch (A-RE) have reclassified Brown Fat's first and foremost role as a STRESS ADAPTIVE TISSUE - vital to our health and well-being.

High performance 'more heat generating' series 5 computer cpu/chips need more temperature control, by way of vents and cooling fins, than say the generally more reliable less heat generating series 4 cpu/chip; So how might this computer analogy be interesting when questioning your temperature control and its relationship to the health and heat generation of your nervous system?... Government statistics show that one in eight people are grossly overweight and in view of the fact that healthy weight control takes time... What's the healthiest way to be overweight while you shed that bulky fat? Crash diets don't work for long and approximately 98% of diets fail in the long run. You could try cutting out chocolate, biscuits and beer for the rest of your natural life. You could make a New Year’s resolution to sweat with a frenzy as you jog 5 miles every day, come hail or high water. Or, you could change your clothing. New research suggests that properly designed clothes can have a profound effect on your metabolism, your weight, and your health. The message for the under active/overweight is to keep your nervous system stimulated & cool and so allow naturally generated warmth from increases in nervous activity help build muscle and shed fat; the overactive/underweight should aim to cool their nervous system in order to stimulate appetite and to prevent heat-induced weight losses of vital tissue. It might sound strange - but this new approach to vitality and weight control, called CLOtherapy training, is supported by an increasing body of international research... And it’s mostly a matter of fat.

BROWN FAT - WHITE HEAT

Our bodies contain many different kinds of fat, some is the vital myelin nerve fat which is vital in helping maintain a healthy nervous system; most is white bulky fat, a usually sluggish bulky tissue which stores excess calories, and increases our waist size. But we also have small amounts of brown stress adaptive fat which is profoundly efficient and can be very aerobically/metabolically active leading it to generate large amounts of heat. Babies have brown fat, but until recently most doctors thought it disappeared as we grow older.

That idea, however, is changing. Dr Pirkko Huttunen, who is Vice-President of the International Society for Adaptive Medicine, studied indoor and outdoor workers in Northern Finland, where the climate is usually cool or cold. The office workers apparently had no brown fat but outdoor workers, such as lumberjacks, did. Dr Huttunen believes the body adapts to cold by growing pockets of brown fat in areas of exposed skin which allow the body to rev up its central heating, burning blood fats and sugars instead of coal. Back in the stone age, brown fat was likely essential, says Dr Huttunen. How else could we keep warm through the long glacial winters? But nowadays office jobs, central heating and warm clothing ensure that our bodies are seldom exposed enough, to stimulate the cold-associated growth of brown fat; so the brown fat we have as babies usually fades away. This explains why few other scientists have found brown fat in adults. Basically, we need to exercise to train our brown fat.

COOL DOWN - WARM UP

Dr Huttunen has found significant amounts of this aerobic brown fat in the armpits and neck of adults and children. She and others believe there are special temperature-sensitive nerves close to the skin’s surface in certain areas of the body, including the neck, breastbone/solar plexus and the spine. If these nerves are exposed to the stimulating stress of cool temperatures, they send a message to the hypothalamus in the brain, telling it that it's okay to raise the thermostat. The brain then allows the skin's brown fat areas to start shedding excess fuel and, the heat that this activity generates, may help raise the body temperature back up to normal.

Professor George Bray of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Louisiana, USA, found that certain stimuli cause the body to start heating up, and his team are convinced that brown fat is involved. Professor Bray: ‘We are becoming aware that brown fat has a very specialised function. Even though there's not much brown fat in a typical adult, up to about 1% of the body by weight, when it gets revved up it produces as much heat as the rest of the body combined.

This probably explains why some people (usually, the heated nervous stress types) can overeat and remain slim; their brown fat enables them to shed excess calories/lagging rather than store them as extra heat storing fatty lagging (which, without effi cient cooling, in such a heated/activity type person could easily lead to a nervous system burnout situation or a loss of vitality); but what about those who eat sparingly, yet still put on the white bulky fat? Professor Bray can explain that too: One reason for obesity may be that certain people are not able to burn off calories as heat, and store them instead as white fat. This could be why older people tend to put on weight, because with aging brown fat becomes less efficient, and less able to burn unwanted calories.

Brown fat is emerging as a key factor associated to whether we’re lean or fat. But is it possible to develop brown fat without going to Finland to work as a lumberjack? The answer is almost certainly yes. New work, by Stéphane Krief, Daniel Ricquier, and colleagues, at the University of Paris has shown that in both adults and children, dormant brown fat cells can be turned into active brown ones whenever (apparently) the nervous system directs the shedding of excess fats; Increasing (A) Fat breakdown and (B) Fat excretion from the intestines. Other studies, around the world, suggest that to increase the efficiency of your active brown fat: Exercise regularly in cool temperatures to train your aerobic ability to generate your own warmth by exercising, put the thermal underwear back in cold storage, and save on those fuel bills by turning down the central heating... American Scientists, and writers, Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw agree with the importance of cooling, but emphasise the importance of keeping active. Exercise usually causes a rise in body temperature, which can suppress brown fat formation; but exercise which is not accompanied by rise in body temperature, such as swimming in cool or lukewarm water, increases brown fat in experimental animals, and boosts their metabolism.

COLD BATHS - TRHT

The idea that a chilly dip could be good for health was supported recently when Professor Vijay Kakkar, head of the Thrombosis Institute in London, suggested that a daily cold bath regime, called Thermo-Regulatory Hydro-Therapy (TRHT), stimulated brown fat, boosted the immune system, improved the circulation, relieved asthma, treated ME, regulated oestrogen / testosterone production and improved hair texture - All through exercising temperature control! ...Regular cold baths are an acquired taste, and take some mastering even if they can stimulate brown fat, so is there an alternative? At the AFRC Babraham Research Institute in Cambridge, Dr Joy Dauncey has been studying the effects of warm and cool environments on the metabolic rate. She found that at a stimulating temperature of 22 degrees Centigrade (which is cool, but warm enough to minimise shivering), her experimental women subjects boosted their metabolism by as much as 10%. This important research proved that a slight cooling of the body may trigger the brown fat, and start it burning calories which can help to maintain body temperature.

At Trinity College, Dublin, Dr Juliet Heaton, discovered brown fat in all age groups from babies to adults aged 80; most importantly her work suggests that the type of brown fat found at the skin's surface, for example between the shoulder blades, is most sensitive to the brown fat activating effects of cool temperatures. In separate studies on metabolic responses of young men and women to cold stress, researchers Andrews and Jackson at Trinity College, Dublin discovered that the more obese we become (especially women), the more our nervous system reduces heat output in response to stress. Dr Fred Andrews: This effect could compound the problem of weight loss in obesity. So is there a comfortable way of exercising an increased metabolic shedding response to stress if you're overweight and reducing the stress response if you're underweight?

Professor Jean Himms-Hagen has been studying subtle effects of animal housing temperatures on brown fat at the University of Ottawa, Canada; Her work has hinted that brown fat 'stress-adaptive thermogenesis' is reduced in the overclothed/overweight, whilst it is increased in the underclothed/underweight. At the Hove Clinic in Sussex, Adrenaline-REsearch (A-RE), a research team led by medical biochemist Trevor Gunn, are testing a patented STRESS-ADAPTIVE TRAINING, range of warm CLOtherapy sportswear with 'coolzones' over the armpits, backbone, breastbone, groin and neck. Even when standing still, these 'coolzones' give the nerves an invigorating cool air massage, and even better, provide for 'stress-release' by allowing any sweat to rapidly evaporate, cool and dry these sweaty skin regions - for safer, more comfortable, exercising. A-RE pioneering theory states that as nervous activity/stress raises temperature within nervous tissue - insulatory white fat is adaptively shed to help keep nerves cool and vital; this results in increased blood fats which need to be mopped up (see below) from the blood stream. It’s a new science called CLOtherapy, focused on improving/training the environmental adaptability of the nervous system, and the medical community are intrigued.

Dr Catherine Geissler is head of the Department of Nutrition at London's King's College. It might work, but I should need to see more evidence. It's true that cooling the body, by wearing less clothes for example increases the amount of calories you burn - but I'm not convinced that local cooling would have the same effect. We just don't know enough about brown fat in humans. But it's certainly an interesting approach, and worth investigating.

Scientists at Adrenaline-REsearch are seeking a wider discussion of their theory that brown fat's first and foremost function is a vital blood cleansing mechanism, acting in an analogous way to the lymph system and playing a fundamental role in both babies and adults health; Trevor Gunn (also a qualified homeopath) is confident of our body's increased capacity to heal instinctively when given an improved thermal environment; Trevor believes that exercising local cooling, especially of the thymus gland, solar plexus and spinal cord, can really help us train our immune & nervous systems to react more positively to stress: There are plenty of animal studies which show that if you cool the nerve endings in the spine, nervous activity can be increased; Stimulate the sensory nerves in the key COOLzone sites by local cooling, for as long as comfortably possible each day - whilst keeping warm and active, and that nervous system training should be enough to help control the activity of your stress-adaptive tissue Brown Fat which can mop up and burn off excess sugars and fats from the bloodstream... So important is our capacity for local nervous system cooling that three eminent University Professors-Michael Cabanac (Quebec), Peter Wheeler (Liverpool) and US fossil expert, Ms Dean Falk suggest that to increase intelligence and dexterity, the need to cool the brain and spinal cord drove ape man to stand up! Our next evolutionary jump is ?...

WINTER OF CONTENT

I was initially skeptical, but agreed to try CLOtherapy training for a few months over the winter. I'm lean, and I didn't lose weight - but then again, I didn't want to. What did happen was that I started eating 5 or 6 square meals a day. I was ravenous, constantly eating, but my weight stayed exactly where it was. All the fatty strain of that excess food was being burned up and converted to heat. My nervous activity and temperature increased to such an extent that I could no longer bear to sleep under a duvet, even on the coldest nights, and slept instead under a single sheet. Colleagues and friends remarked that I was sometimes hot to the touch, and asked if I had a fever - but I remained free of colds and flu throughout the winter... The verdict, then, on CLOtherapy? Well, the Health Education Authority recommends 16 - 20 degrees Centigrade for babies room temperature at night; Adrenaline-REsearch suggests, for optimum health / core (nervous system) temperature regulation, we should all train our ability to generate interval warmth and so adapt our 'coolzones' to be comfortable at 22 degrees 24hrs a day, which seems reasonable. The experts are still undecided, but on the basis of my experience with the 'CLOtherapy SWEATshirt', over a period of several months, CLOtherapy training really does make a difference. If you can control your appetite as you train your brown fat to go into action, your excess white fats, like the snows of yesteryear, should gradually melt away.

OUR PORTABLE CLIMATE

Whilst traditional exercise and a calorie-controlled nutrition plan may help you achieve your target weight, (when used alone or in conjunction with CLOtherapy training), according to Dr Dauncey, gentle 22 degrees Centigrade cooling stimulation, even if applied for only 10% of the time, could result in a slow but sure average weight loss of 8 kilograms (17.5 pounds) over the course of ten years.
